Award Winning Barber

All I can say is wow I did it!! I brought home a third place trophy in my second competition. My coworkers and  I from Erskine Reeves Barbers,  Larue Lawson and Steve Wren,  drove out to Indiana and compete in the Crossroads Barber competition.

I didn't know what to expect but I know we didn't want to leave from there without a trophy. Loosing in the Proud Lady, really grew me and humbled me. I'm grateful to God first of all for allowing me to have a great model Leython Williams and giving me the vision to create a great piece of art. The feeling I felt when my name was called was surreal.

I honestly thought I didn't hear what I heard. Johnnie Griffin come on up, congratulations you've won third place. My mouth dropped and all I could here was my brothers Larue and Steve scream A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was an even greater feeling to hear his name called for 2nd place.

It felt like we won a playoff game on the road,  we weren't in our home state and two barbers from the same shop brought home some hardware. This may not be a big deal to some but for me it is. I'll never forget where I came from, being the worst barber in the shop at one point to one of the best and winning a trophy. The first trophy will always be special.

On to the next one...

Please be sure to check out my bros work on there instagram pages.  Excellent barbers and great men with integrity.

2014 Proud Lady Barber Competition

So this  was my first time ever competing in a hair show. I had to share my experience.. Walking into the Tinley Park Convention Center not knowing what to expect. My model and my brother Larue (P.O.E) who was also competing were anxious to get on that stage and showcase what we can do with a pair of clippers. After registration we immediately went onto the floor room where booths were set up  like Andis, Sam Lameer and Wahl etc. I bought some new clippers and walked and shook hands and greeted other barbers who I follow and respect. Its always exciting to be in the presence of greatness.

The atmosphere was thick with anticipation. As the time was drawing near for us to go to the briefing before the competition, I was greeted by one my good friends and fellow barbers who I have a lot of respect for. Mr Groom Theory himself Haven The Groomer Hobbs. He was in the competition as well,  he's a champion and I knew i had to bring my A game to win this.

With my briefcase full of clippers my model and I walked into the briefing room and set where all the other barbers were. We were told all the rules and went and set up on the stage. My heart was pumping, my blood was boiling. Even though this was something I do everyday, being in that environment with other barbers that are great, I felt a rush. I was ready..

As the DJ dropped the music and we were told to begin i was in attack mode, i thought this is my moment, its time to show the world that DUDECANCUT!!! We had 30 minutes to do a flawless haircut. Not a single hair could be out of place. I did my best to make sure that my model was perfect as possible. The hair cut i did was a south of france with a beard.

The hair cut I did, did not place and I was very disappointed on the inside. I felt I could have placed 5th at least. But this was my first shot and so i know now what the judges were looking for. Overall it was a great experience i for sure will be competing again. My next show will be the Bonner Bros in Atlanta, GA in August.

Wish me luck

Thanks for your support

THE SUB CULTURE OF BARBER SHOPS

You know what’s great about subcultures? Many of them highlight and rely on traditions. You can hate them, you can love them, but you cannot deny the fact that various subcultures revived so many forgotten things and brought them to a new level with a new modern twist.

Revival of barbershops in Los Angeles provides a great example of a subculture relying on traditions. A famous Youtube channel Thrash Lab has produced several videos on subcultures in the US. One of the most recent 7-minute long documentary focuses on barbershop culture in Los Angeles. It presents several stories of professional barbers and their views on the art of shaving. These are only a few examples of this growing trend.

Take a look at the video:

IT’S A CHOICE

For enthusiasts from Capsule Barbers, Bolt Barbers and Proper Barbershop shaving is more of an art, rather than a daily routine. They would hand pick own tools and shaving materials. These masters simply believe that “if you look good, you feel good.”

Even though many barbers come from different backgrounds, they have similar stories. Many used to have ‘proper’ jobs, living the white collar dream until they realized that something’s missing. The corporate life simply didn’t make them happy. Some people have dreamt about barber career for years, while others were introduced to this art by chance. “I’d rather make less money and be happy, than make more money and be miserable,” says Vince Garcia, the owner of Capsule barbershop. Barber’s passion for cutting hair makes a big difference. Clients appreciate this spirit and return for another haircut or a clean shave.

Modern day barbers are pure artists who are trying to preserve this dying tradition.  They employ a creative approach to every customer. Many people pay attention to their looks, that’s why these barbershops gained such a broad attention. Even though barbershops have been around for centuries, they seem novel in a modern day society.

IT IS A LIFESTYLE

Every barbershop has its own established clientele. Men stand in line to get a haircut or trim a beard. Barbershops create a special social connectivity with their clients. Men come to have a break from their routine, socialize and meet like-minded people. This is a social club rather than an ordinary hairdresser’s salon.

Professional barbers use exclusive shaving products and instruments for a smooth shave. They have to go through years of practice until they actually master an art of shaving. It is no joke; a barber has to be extremely skillful in order to avoid any accidents and cuts. That’s why this job requires close attention to details and an eye for different styles and shaving techniques.

This love for the art of barbering has transformed the shaving and hairdressing scene in LA. Now men can go back to the basics and experience a great quality of barbering. This subculture proves that the art of barbering is in place in the modern world. Its rich history and traditions are embraced with a modern touch.

Why Barbering is Art....

Hello world, i appreciate you all coming to the site. Im gonna start doing weekly post every monday to keep you guys up to date with me and barbering period.  I have some really cool ideas I'm gonna bring to the website. DudeCanCut, isn't just about me, the founder. Im all about building and networking also showcasing other barbers that can cut.

People need to understand we take our craft serious as barbers and it is an art form. We strive to create the best haircuts we can daily and its not easy to do. I remember growing up going to the barbershop with my dad and thinking how cool it must be to cut hair. I never thought in a million years i'd be in that position and kids are looking at me the same way. Barbers are about diversity and bringing people together, thats why I'm honored to be one.
