The Price of a Haircut vs. the Value of a Man

The Price of a Haircut vs. the Value of a Man

By Johnnie Griffin II | Founder, DudeCanCut Hair Studio

Somewhere along the way, I think we started confusing the price of a haircut with the value of taking care of ourselves.

I've been a professional barber for nearly 18 years. Over that time, I've watched the industry change in ways I never imagined. From the styles we wear to the way barbers operate their businesses, just about everything has evolved.

But lately, there's a conversation happening online that I find particularly interesting.

Men are upset about haircut prices.

Everywhere you look, there's another video complaining about a barber charging $50, $75, or even $100 for a haircut. Some men are convinced that no haircut should cost that much, while others question what makes a barber's services worth those prices.

And listen, I understand.

Everybody has a budget. Everybody has responsibilities. And everybody has the right to decide how they spend their hard-earned money.

I'm not here to argue with that.

But I do have a theory.

Have We Stopped Valuing Ourselves?

I wonder if somewhere along the way, men have begun to see personal grooming as an unnecessary expense rather than an important part of taking care of themselves.

Think about it.

Many of us wouldn't hesitate to spend money maintaining our vehicles. We understand that our homes require upkeep. We'll invest in entertainment, technology, and countless other things that bring us enjoyment.

But when it comes to investing time, energy, and resources into ourselves, something changes.

Suddenly, taking care of our appearance becomes optional.

And I think that's worth talking about.

Because grooming isn't just about looking good for other people.

It's about how you show up for yourself.

The Man in the Mirror

Let me ask you something.

When was the last time you intentionally did something that made you feel good about the man looking back at you in the mirror?

Not because somebody told you to.

Not because you had a wedding, job interview, or special occasion.

But simply because you decided you were worth the effort.

As men, we carry a lot.

We're husbands, fathers, sons, providers, leaders, employees, entrepreneurs, and friends. We face financial pressure, family responsibilities, expectations, disappointments, and challenges that many of us rarely talk about.

And in the middle of carrying everybody else's needs, it's easy to neglect our own.

Sometimes that neglect starts showing up in the small things.

The way we dress. The way we groom. The way we rest. The way we speak about ourselves.

I believe taking pride in your appearance can be one small expression of something much bigger:

You haven't forgotten about yourself.

Let's Talk About the Barber, Too

Now, let me address the other side of this conversation.

A quality haircut isn't simply the 30 or 45 minutes you spend sitting in a barber chair.

You're also paying for years of experience, developed skill, continuing education, professional tools, sanitation, business expenses, and the barber's commitment to delivering a consistent result.

After nearly two decades behind the chair, I know firsthand what it takes to develop that level of craftsmanship.

And I believe skilled professionals deserve to charge appropriately for their work.

But here's something else I believe.

A higher price doesn't automatically mean a better haircut. And an expensive haircut doesn't make you a more valuable man.

Those things aren't the same.

Premium grooming should offer real value: quality, consistency, professionalism, attention to detail, and an experience that respects the client's time.

That's what I work to deliver at DudeCanCut Hair Studio.

Your Budget Doesn't Determine Your Worth

I want to be very clear about something.

This isn't an argument that every man should spend $90 on a haircut.

Some men can comfortably afford that. Others can't. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with making a responsible financial decision.

There are excellent barbers at different price points.

But whether you spend $20, $50, or $100, don't lose sight of the larger principle.

Take care of yourself.

Get some rest. Pay attention to your health. Work on your character. Show up for your family. Take pride in your appearance.

And every now and then, give yourself permission to enjoy a little care and attention, too.

You don't have to prove your worth by spending money.

You should take care of yourself because you already have worth.

More Than a Haircut

That's the heart behind what I do at DudeCanCut.

Yes, I cut hair. Yes, I sculpt beards. And yes, I offer premium grooming experiences.

But what I really love is watching a man look in the mirror when the service is finished.

The smile.

The posture.

The confidence.

That moment when he looks at himself and remembers what it feels like to be taken care of.

After 18 years, that moment still means something to me.

So the next time you see another debate about haircut prices, I hope you'll consider a bigger question.

Not just, “How much should a haircut cost?”

But “Am I making the effort to take care of the man I've been entrusted to become?”

Because gentlemen, you're worth taking care of.

And that's something no price tag can determine.
